Wildlife feeding activities induce papillae proliferation in the rumen of fallow deer

چکیده
Abstract Wildlife feeding activities are growing as a trend in recent years, with wild ruminants (e.g. deer urban parks) receiving an increasingly unnatural diet result of public attention. The effects on the gastrointestinal tract have been established context animal agriculture, highly modified diets driving morphological changes rumen papillae. However, these dietary not widely explored that exposed to recreational feeding. aim this study was investigate human-wildlife interactions papillae population fallow Phoenix Park, Dublin. length, width, and density ventral were compared across variety behaviours, ranging from consistently accept food humans rarely, if ever, humans. surface enlargement factor (SEF) also calculated measure overall absorptive similarly compared. Statistical analysis revealed consistent acceptors had significantly higher than those do food. Increased high amounts human suggests shift internal environment. A lack significant change SEF cellular may be occurring. This artificial state requires further attention elucidate full extent impacts integrity deer. Moreover, is call for research into other occur human-dominated landscapes, beyond Park.

No Heterozygote Advantage in Fallow Deer
Effects of inbreeding on individual fitness are of long-standing interest in evolutionary biology and conservation studies. Since estimation of the inbreeding coefficient of a given individual is often impossible in wild populations, some authors have attempted to demonstrate inbreeding depression in such populations by correlating the multi-locus marker heterozygosity of individuals with a tra...
متن کاملAdaptive Lévy Walks in Foraging Fallow Deer
BACKGROUND Lévy flights are random walks, the step lengths of which come from probability distributions with heavy power-law tails, such that clusters of short steps are connected by rare long steps. Lévy walks maximise search efficiency of mobile foragers. Recently, several studies raised some concerns about the reliability of the statistical analysis used in previous analyses. Further, it is ...
متن کاملFeeding and social behavior of fallow deer (Dama dama L.) under intensive pasture confinement.
A population of 110 adult fallow deer kept in an enclosure under very intensive conditions (31.4 deer/ha) was observed for 12 h/d (from 0800 to 2000) for 17 d during the birth season in order to study social and feeding behavior under intensive management. Observations were carried out by a scan sampling technique. The feeding activity of all the deer that were not hidden behind trees or other ...
متن کاملFallow deer impacts on Wakatipu beech forest
This study uses data from forty-nine 20 m × 20 m permanent plots measured in 1976, 1982, 1989 and 1997-2002 in Wakatipu Forest, western Otago. We relate changes in red (Nothofagus fusca), silver (Nothofagus menziesii) and mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) forest vegetation to the presence of fallow deer (Dama dama). Vegetation composition is likely to have been altered pr...
متن کاملA Breeding Program for Farmed Fallow Deer
There is increasing archaeological evidence that deer were being systematically cropped or “ranched” much earlier than has been previously supposed. In the Mediterranean region, fallow deer (Dama danm dama), made a sudden appearance on several islands at the same time as sheep, goats and pigs, and subsequently their bones make up 70 percent of those found at Neolithic sites between 6000 and 200...
